It was an exciting day as Nike held a launch event for the newest addition to the signature KD shoe line… the 7… or the return of the strap. I’m not a fan of having a strap on the shoe so I’m a little disappointed about that but I am glad to see some mesh return to the shoe. The colorways are also compelling as well but I would have to say the USA, Calm Before the Strom, and Global Game, are my initial favorites.
Here are some highlights from the Nike presser…
“The KD7 combines leading performance innovation with a colorful narrative pulled from Durant’s fascination with meteorology that began as a child and continues today.”
“Chang accomplished this “best of both worlds” design challenge by using seamless forefoot mesh, dynamic Nike Flywire technology and encapsulated Nike Zoom in the front of the shoe. Bridging the transition between the forefoot and heel is a midfoot strap. Chang combined Hyperposite support in the heel with a newly developed visible Nike Zoom Air bag for responsive cushioning.”
“The KD7 colorway narrative begins with lightning, and more specifically the average temperature of a lightning strike – 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It also builds on KD’s insight of wanting to be lightning-quick.”
“The KD7 35,000 Degrees colorway features a bright mango upper, volt outsole and hits of deep grey to represent the electric nature of lightning strikes. Stratospheric graphics and nods to lightning also appear on the sole and Swoosh.”
“Personal cues are featured on each of the KD7 colorways: a silhouette of his homestate of Maryland is embedded on the outsole; and the forefoot strap includes the names of his mother Wanda, his grandmother Barbara, his father Wayne and his brother Tony.”

KD7 July 4th: Durant’s love for Independence Day with its fireworks, or “man-made lightning,” inspired this this red, white and blue colorway featuring festive graphics on the tongue lining and Swoosh. Launch: June 26.

KD7 35,000 Degrees: Lightning strikes earth at an average temperature of 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and much like Durant’s game, it is powerful and unpredictable. This bright mango, grey and volt version of the KD7 is the lead colorway for the new collection. Launch: July 12.

KD7 Global Game: The global game of basketball has given this young man who grew up in a small town outside Washington, D.C., an opportunity to travel extensively throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe. This all-red colorway features a globe graphic on the tongue and a confetti-adorned Swoosh. Durant will lead USA Basketball into a busy summer basketball season that begins with the World Basketball Festival in the Windy City of Chicago this August, and wraps up in Spain at the Basketball World Cup this September. Launch: Aug. 2.

KD7 Calm Before the Storm: The grey and pink colorway of this KD7 is indicative of skies that appear tranquil before the onset of a powerful storm, though Durant typically remains calm even throughout a swirling frenzy on-court. Launch: Aug. 16.

KD7 Easy Money: Inventor and statesman Ben Franklin used a metal key and a kite to prove that lightning was really a stream of electrified air. Franklin’s famous stormy kite experiment in June 1752 radically changed general understanding of the power of lightning and electricity. As an ode to Franklin’s fascination with weather and his prominence on the U.S. $100 bill, the Easy Money colorway features green hues and graphics from the Benjamin bill – a tribute to KD’s nickname, Easy Money. Launch: Sept. 10.

KD7 Good Apples: Durant, who led the league in scoring four out of the last five years, is a perfectionist and hard-working student of offensive efficiency and shot analytics. Durant views the basketball court similar to an orchard where every shot is an apple. “I approach scoring like apple picking,” says Durant. “Keep the good ones and leave the rotten ones.”

KD7 Uprising: Kevin Durant’s rise to superstardom parallels the rare weather phenomenon known as sprite lightning, which served as inspiration for the KD7 ‘Uprising’ colorway. “I started from the bottom with humble beginnings and I’m focused on rising to the top,” said Durant. Sprite lightning, a mystery to many meteorologists, rises upwards from the top of thunderclouds into the atmosphere. Like Durant’s career trajectory, sprite lightning is an uncommon occurrence.

KD7 On the Road: Kevin Durant’s journey on the road has brought him around the world and back multiple times as he enters his eighth year in the pros. Durant has logged roughly 225 hours of playing time in away games since entering the league, which has prepared him well for the demands of road trips. As reigning MVP on one of the league’s most successful road teams, Durant has faced a fair share of opposing crowds. The pressure builds character, and Durant has welcomed the pressure with open arms.
“Success is not a destination, it’s a journey,” said Durant. “I approach each road game like a business trip where we have a job to do — this is part of the journey.”
At every chance on the road, Durant looks for an open gym for training and shooting even beyond his team commitments. Even if it’s 30 minutes for a shoot-around, it’s worth the effort to Durant. He’s a road warrior who never takes time off. The KD7 On the Road shoe debuts on nike.com and at select retail locations globally on Oct. 23.
