Uni-Forum Observations
A random collection of new uniform news including new alternate jerseys from the Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings. I just had my birthday but had I known that someone is making Jordan Shoe cakes, I would have requested one of those. Lastly, BYU and Utah went color on color in their matchup this week… no whites.
Uni-Forum Observation – Pensacola Blue Wahoos
I give you the Pensacola Blue Wahoos! The Blue Wahoos are the Reds’ new Double-A affiliate and they will begin playing in 2012 (opening day April 5, 2012). I love their description from their press release: “A tenacious, diving Blue Wahoo is the centerpiece of the logo, shown breaking away from a fisherman’s line.”
By the way, that is NOT pink in their color scheme, it is neon red! Another excerpt… “Neon red, Gulf Coast royal, Blue Angel navy and Tin Roof tin make up the club’s official colors, celebrating the textures and colors of the Emerald Coast. The Blue Wahoos are the first sports team to adopt Neon red, a tribute to the neon signs that illuminate Pensacola’s beachfront establishments.”
In regards to their caps, “The cap logo features a Blue Wahoo circling a baseball bat forming the shape of a “P” for Pensacola. The team’s alternate cap features a fishing hook also in the shape of a “P.” Other alternate logos will be unveiled over the next several months.”
I know it sounds like I’m dogging this set… actually, I think the Wahoo looks pretty good. I do think the wordmark needs some help… it doesn’t match the tenacity of the Wahoo in my opinion. The creators of this set come from the firm Brandiose – check out more about the Wahoos identity on their site.
The Florida Marlins…err Miami…err say what now?!?!
(Editors Note – Showtime must be doing some funky retro posting, I just saw he stole my thunder on this with a post on the 12th only I’m fairly sure that post wasn’t there an hour ago…maybe its just the cold medicine. Sorry for the double news! Never had to say that on Droppin.com before…)
I just stumbled upon the news that the Florida Marlins are getting a new ballpark in 2012 and to commemorate the move they are committing to the city of Miami and re-branding themselves as the Miami Marlins…
Oh and with that re-branding comes…

Thats right folks, new colors, logos, jerseys, hats…the whole shebang…
Well first off, I don’t think this is going to help with the stereotype regarding drugs and Miami because you would have to be coked out of your mind to come up with that color scheme. Yes the palate is a little hard on the eyes for sure but I get it. You want to catch some of that delightful “art deco” Miami style that isn’t at all cliched and it helps capture all the Dolphin fans. Hey anytime you can work an orange jersey and hat into your wardrobe you gotta jump on that right? I just hope its not to late to bust in some orange pants for the worlds first ORANGE OUT!!!
Here is a little buzz speak from the firm that handled the redesign:
“The new primary mark features a sleek, iconic marlin image swirling around an art-deco influenced M – a symbol for both the city name as well as its nickname. A new color palette has been selected with input from season ticket holders and fans of the team. The teal has been replaced with the colors of Miami – Ocean Blue, Sun Yellow and Red-Orange.
A distinguishing feature of the new uniform presentation is presence the word MIAMI arching across the front of both the white home and light gray road uniforms. This is the first time in modern Major League Baseball history that the city name appears on the front of a home jersey and illustrates the franchises commitment to it’s new city and “The Gateway to the Americas”.”
So the Florida Marlins season tickets holders, all 12 of them, voted for these “colors of Miami”? That’s a little hard to believe. Not only that but they have to put Miami on the home jerseys so everyone doesn’t forget where they are at. Thats to be expected though, what with the run at every free agent on the market the Marlins are going for this off season, they are bound to forget where they are playing.
But fear not loyal Miami sports fan…our transition isn’t stopping here. The new stadium will feature awesome things like:
A retractable roof…
Sweet, sweet fishtanks (yes 2x the sweet) behind home plate so little Jimmy with the front row seats has something to do during those long boring MLB games…
Oh and when one of your Miami Marlins goes yard in the new park…THIS HAPPENS!!!!
AHHHHH MYY EYEEEEEEEESS!!!!!
MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP!!!
But it can’t stop, it won’t stop…it is the 2012 Miami Marlins baybee!!!
Hey anytime you can combine the glitz and glamor of Vegas with the pageantry of Sea World at an MLB game…well full steam ahead sez I! Add it all up and I think I finally understand what Will Smith was rapping about!
(sorry I realize I probably should have warned you before you scrolled down to that image and truly apologize for any damage it did however if I had warned you I think it would have lost its epicness don’t you agree?)
On a side note at least they had the balls to go through with a full re-branding…unlike a certain horrible NBA franchise in Utah who thought it was a good idea to dust off old logos and do a horrible palate swap to try and capitalize on a hot selling alternate jersey…
(Oh and one last thing, I dare somebody…anybody (you hear me crispy creamers?) to re-brand the Miami Heat with these colors so that every Miami sports team will feature Orange and Blue. Those are the colors of Miami after all!)
A Return to the Good Old Days for the Blue Jays
The news won’t be official until tomorrow but it is rumored that the Blue Jays will be reverting back to an updated version of their old “woodpecker” logo. The press release is scheduled for November 18th… hearing noonish (est). There are also rumors of a red jersey… I’m always down for a red jersey. I was fine with their current set but I also enjoyed the past set so count me in… good move Toronto.
UPDATE 11/18/11: This is the official logo -
Back Without Black – Mets celebrate 50th Anniversary
The New York Mets will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary next year and today unveiled their 50th Anniversary patch as well as an updated uniform set… most notably without the black tones that infiltrated their set back in 1998. They will still have a black uniform that they will be using “sparingly” but all of the other uniforms will return to the classic Mets style. The patch will be worn on the left sleeve as well as on the back of the cap. Well done Mets!
The Mets have also created a #50 Fantastic jersey which they will be giving out to one fan at each of the 81 home games. No player, manager, or coach will be allowed to wear this number in 2012. Another good branding and marketing move for the club.
The Bird is Back
The Baltimore Orioles are turning to the past by bringing back an updated version of the Cartoon Bird that adorned their uniforms from the 60s-80s. While I wasn’t a big fan of the realistic bird they were using recently, I’m not sure a return to the smiling bird is the best move. Seeing the familiar cartoon bird on those tri-color hats will bring back memories of the good old days but it just isn’t all that intimidating. I’m sure they could have come up with a better version.
The uniforms are also getting a makeover. Excerpts from the Orioles press release:
“For the first time since the 1992 season, the Orioles will wear an orange jersey for select home games. Also, in honor of the 20th Anniversary of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, each of the club’s jerseys will feature a patch on the right sleeve commemorating the anniversary and the left sleeve of each uniform will feature a patch with the Maryland flag and “Baltimore Orioles” text. On the road uniforms, the “Baltimore” script on the road jerseys has been restyled, featuring a less severe angle and the removal of the tapering effect of the letters. The club’s primary logo, “Orioles” script on the team jerseys and O’s alternate cap are unchanged.” Read the entire release here.
Here are your Miami Vice… I mean Marlins!
The Florida Marlins are now offici
ally the Miami Vice… I mean Marlins. The team’s new name, logo, and uniforms were unveiled at the Marlins new ballpark and was only missing Crockett and Tubbs.
See the photo below, doesn’t Logan Morrison look pumped about the team’s new set? I think it fits the city’s style but I’m not on board. Miami fans, ask yourself this… how would Albert Pujols look in these?

San Diego Padres Mash-up a “New-Old” Identity
The San Diego Padres unveiled an updated set of logos and uniforms at PETCO Park recently. The set is really a mash-up of former logos, colors, and wait for it… new piping! The organization admitted that the most recent set wasn’t going over very well with the fan-base (it sounds bigger when you add ‘base’ to the end of it) but the fans also weren’t receptive to a dramatic overhaul. So, where does that leave us… take the best of what they have done so far and get rid of the rest.
I wasn’t following baseball back then but apparently the 2012 set is a nod to the PCL days (’36-68). The home whites and road grays will have classic block lettering and the alternate blue uniform will have the interlocking “SD” logo on the chest. The team is also bringing back the Swinging Friar logo but it will be used in the updated color scheme, rather than the brown and yellow of before. Although, they did mention that the classic brown uniforms will make appearances throughout the year.
Another very cool announcement from the club is that they plan to outfit 10,000 youth baseball players from local Little League districts with Padres button-down jerseys and hats to wear in their upcoming seasons. They will have their choice of selecting one style of uniform worn from throughout the Padres history. No better way to build the fan-base than to get them while they are young. My favorite MLB teams are those that I played on as a little-leaguer.
Where did the Heels go?
When it rains, it pours. UNC unveiled another new uniform this week that they will wear on Veterans Day… blue camo! Looks like this design will still include the new graphics on back making it look very busy. Hopefully it will be a distraction to the Spartans on Nov. 11th. I am glad to see them keep their blue scheme as opposed to the other teams who revert back to the traditional brown camo. The Spartans are also going with a camo look for the game but their scheme will be green. Good thing they are not playing on Oregon’s “woods” court or they might really have an advantage.
I’m not sure if they will be going on sale but I’d consider buying the shorts if they do. Go Heels!
Official press release from tarheelblue.com below:
The North Carolina men’s basketball team will wear specially-designed camouflaged, light blue uniforms for its game in the Quicken Loans Carrier Classic on Nov. 11 against Michigan State in San Diego, the school announced today. TarHeelBlue.com has exclusive photos of a sample of the uniform design.
The Spartans also will wear camouflaged green and white uniforms for the game, which will be played on the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier in San Diego on Veterans Day next month.
Carolina’s uniforms are versions of its redesigned jerseys for this season, unveiled earlier this month. No player names will appear on the back of the jerseys. Instead, “U.S.A.” will replace players’ last names above the uniform number on the back of all the jerseys.
Kobe VII
Alright, this news is a few days old now but with work and family I’ve been unable to post it until now. Behold the official Kobe VII:
Thanks, as always, goes out to marqueesole for the fantastic photography of the shoe. What we are looking at is the “inline” colorway of the Kobe VII Supreme. Supreme you ask? Yes well as seems to be the standard with signature shoes these days the Kobe VII will hit in three versions at three different price points. The first to hit, on December 23, will be the Supreme version in Black/White/Del Sol colorway. From what I have gathered “Supreme” in this case refers to the removable ankle bootie. It features some “pro combat-esque” padding and wraps around the bottom of the insole to ensure it stays in place. That of course also means that the insole is removable. The shoe will retail for the steep price of $180 but promises to attempt to combine the perfect world of low top/ankle support. We shall see.
The second version will be the base version, without inner bootie from what I hear which is good because the Supreme cannot be worn without it. It will retail for $140 and no pics have been released to the wild as of yet. The first colorways of this model will hit in February 2012.
Last will be the “Elite”. Little is know about the Elites other then the fact that they retail for $200 so Elite may just mean more money. The first Elite’s will hit in April 2012.
