The third Men in Black film, imaginatively entitled Men in Black III is set to come out in May this year and has fans eagerly awaiting its release. Will Smith returns to the big screen as Agent J and is again joined by Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K. Smith’s character must journey back to the 1960s to the early years of Men in Black, in order to save Agent K from an alien. Of course, he must also stop history from being altered, which is perhaps easier said than done

Joining these two is Emma Thompson, known for playing Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter films, as well as Karen in most people’s favourite romantic comedy, Love Actually. She is recognisable for these roles as well as many others, whether fans are playing Party Poker with the television on in the background or are avid followers of her career. She plays Agent Oh, with Alice Eve playing a young Agent Oh back in the 1960s.

Also part of the cast of Men in Black III is Josh Brolin, playing the part of the young Agent K. Brolin is known for appearing in many films, including No Country for Old Men, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and True Grit. Lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, Nicole Scherzinger has also been trying her hand at acting, and appears in this film as Lilly, Agent K’s girlfriend and an antagonist to the plot. Chief Zed, head of Men in Black is played by Rip Torn and Jermaine Clement plays Boris.

Men in Black III is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and it is looking good. There have been teaser posters around for a while and the trailer is certainly giving us what we want. The final verdict however will have to wait for when the film comes out.

So let me get one thing straight here…no Scarlett, no Cobra Commander, no Destro and no Baroness?  Am I right?

Still looks pretty fun and hopefully will clear out the bitter taste from the first movie.

Okay admission time…I’m a fan of the Metric system.

Or at least I’m a fan of the band Metric, a Canadian indie rock/new wave band.  I first stumbled onto Metric while playing NBA 2k10 (which has to be one of the greatest soundtracks for a video game ever by the way with in addition to Metric’s Help I’m Alive also features greats like Champion, Kanye’s Amazing, One Day, They’re Everywhere, Shootin, Top of the World, International, Electric Feel, Wavin the Flag, Mirando, Black and Blue, List of Demands, Radio Ladio, Falcon Jab, Lock It Down, only a handful of duds in the bunch) uhh where was I?

Oh yeah, Help I’m Alive quickly became entrenched in my brain from playing the game but that wasn’t enough to get me on the Metric bandwagon just yet.

The tipping point came when I watched a little movie called “Scott Pilgrim VS The World” (and for the record yes I’m a huge fan of the movie but that deserves its own post some day.  You could say I’m in lesbian with it…) and caught a little ditty called “Black Sheep” from the fictional “Clash at Demonhead” band.  A little research revealed that the song was actually written by Metric and they had performed the version of the song on the soundtrack (another great soundtrack by the way).  Black Sheep was every bit as good as “Help I’m Alive”.  Side note, the band Clash At Demonhead was at least partially, if not fully, inspired by Metric as Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley referenced pictures of lead singer Emily Haines when drawing them so it was very fitting they provide a track for such an integral part of the movie.

Now I was a fan and it wasn’t until doing a little more research that I connected the dots and realized that both songs were performed by the same group.  Now having two Metric tunes in my brain I was a full on fan and searched for more.

Their entire library is fantastic (Hardwire, On The Sly, Soft Rock Star, Raw Sugar, White Gold, London Half Life, Ending Start, Sick Muse, Satellite Mind, Twilight Galaxy, Gimme Sympathy, Collect Call, Front Row, Blindness, Stadium Love are all awesome off the top of my head) but they also released an acoustic EP which while seemingly stripping away what makes them Metric (the whole new wave synth/techno thing) brought some of their greatest hits to life in an all new way…

With all that said I give you the acoustic version of “Help I’m Alive”.  The acoustic version is a particularly haunting, soulful, reserved version that brings out the heart of the song.

And just because I feel I’d be doing a disservice to anyone hearing Metric for the first time, here is the album version of “Help I’m Alive”

Its a good time to hop on the Metric bandwagon as the group is scheduled to drop their 5th album in early 2012.

OK, really only the first 20 seconds matter but this was a delight to stumble upon tonight.

If you guessed it is from television’s Community, you are right!  This is the ditty that Abed and Troy have been bringing into at least two different episodes so far [Real name is Daybreak by Michael Haggins].  Once during the Halloween episode while Abed was sharing his scary story.  The other was from Troy as he was exiting from his blanket fort (and locking it for good measure) only to find out that Annie stepped on Abed’s special edition Black Knight DVD.  Both instances are out there in YouTube land if you want to enjoy a good laugh.

Okay I don’t get into politics much here on Droppin.com, mainly because I’m right and everyone else is wrong and I don’t feel like arguing about it.  However it was recently brought to my attention that Herman Cain, former presidential hopeful and alleged “friend” to the ladies, quoted a line from the hit movie Pokemon 2000 in his speech ceasing his campaign last week.

I could go off on that but why waste my energy when the professionals have done such a bang up job…

I think we need to stand up and salute anyone who is trying to run a presidential campaign, for the United States of America mind you and not president of the 6th grade, for using a line from the Pokemon 2000 movie. If only he had told us he was going to eliminate homework, extend the weekend and put root beer in the drinking fountains…we may have been looking at our next president instead of just another historical footnote…

Are we on the cusp of the return of the  Conchords?  Well that entirely depends on if you can believe anything that comes out of the mouth of Brett McKenzie.

For those of you not aware Brett has recently been in the spotlight thanks to his hand in crafting some of the songs in the new Muppets movie of all places and is apparently reliving his role as awesome elf #13985 in the upcoming Hobbit movie.

Doing press for the Muppet movie over the weekend Brett dropped the news that “We’re gonna try and do a movie. We just need a story.”  Of course he followed that up by adding “I’m gonna go back to New Zealand tomorrow, maybe film it next week. And then edit it the week after. I don’t know how familiar you are with movies, but there’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff that could take one or two weeks. Probably in about a month we’ll have a premiere.”

However the movie may be a real possibility.  Long term FOTC conspirator and director James Bobin has also been in the spotlight having directed said Muppets movie and working with Brett has apparently brought back fond memories of the series.  When asked about the movie he added:

“Jemaine, Bret and I are constantly in touch. We’re good friends. It’s just a question of our schedule. As everything, these answers are always about schedules. Jemaine’s in Greece, Bret’s in New Zealand and I’m in Los Angeles. I’d love to do it. It’s just a question of what it would be and when we would do it, but I’m sure because that’s what I want to make happen at some point.”

The success of the Muppets would seem to give some added weight to the idea that the trio could get the backing needed in Hollywood to greenlight the project.  After two years away here is for hoping they are ready to get back to new material.

In addition, Brett dropped the news that the Conchords will be touring in 2012.  “We’re planning to do solo tours at exactly the same time. On the same venues. And we’re going to play the same set list. We’ll play the same songs, simultaneously. We’re loosely planning to tour in the next six months, yeah.”
